The desert only performs for about ninety minutes.
Camel safari, jeep rides over the dunes, folk music after dark, dinner off the fire and a tent for the night — at Sam or, if you'd rather it were quieter, Khuri.
- 42 km west
- 15:00, your hotel
- From ₹400
- 22:30 or next day
Two dune fields, and they are not the same evening
This is the choice that shapes everything else. Neither is wrong — they just suit different people, and nobody tells you that before you've booked.
Sam Sand Dunes
The bigger dune field and the one almost everyone means. More camps, more camels, a proper crowd at sunset — and the scale of the sand is genuinely different here.
First visit, families, anyone who wants the full evening programme
Khuri Sand Dunes
Smaller dunes, fewer camps, a village next door. You trade some spectacle for a great deal of quiet, and the night sky is noticeably better.
Repeat visitors, couples, anyone allergic to crowds
Safari rates
Starting rates for the ride itself. A camp night bundles the transfer, safari, folk evening, dinner and the tent — we quote that as one number.
Camel safari
About 30 minutes
from ₹400
Led on foot at walking pace, out past the first ridge where the crowds thin.
Jeep safari
About 30 minutes
from ₹1,500
Open-top Thar over the high dunes, for anyone who wants the fast version.
Rates are starting prices and vary with the camp, the season and group size. We confirm exactly what a fare covers — and whether it is per person or per vehicle — before you pay anything.
What actually happens, and when
Times are typical for October to March, when almost everyone comes. In summer the whole thing shifts later by about forty minutes, because the sun does.

Pickup from your hotel
We leave town early enough that you reach the dunes with the light still high. The road west runs past Kuldhara and the edge of the Desert National Park — worth the window seat.

Camel safari across the dunes
Forty minutes to an hour on camelback, out past the first ridge where the crowds thin. Your camel handler walks alongside the whole way.
Jeep safari and dune bashing
Twenty minutes of open-top Thar over the high dunes, for anyone who wants the fast version. Entirely skippable — plenty of people prefer to stay and walk.

Sunset from the high dune
The reason the whole day is built backwards from this hour. Chai comes out, the ridge turns copper, and nobody talks much for a while.

Rajasthani cultural evening
Manganiar and Langa musicians, kalbelia dancing, and a fire in the middle of the camp. It runs about ninety minutes, and it is not a token performance.

Dinner under the tents
A Rajasthani thali served hot off the fire — dal baati churma, ker sangri, and plenty that is not spicy. Tell us in advance about Jain, vegan or allergy needs.
- Dal baati churma
- Ker sangri
- Gatte ki sabzi
- Bajre ki roti
- Jaggery and ghee
Stargazing, then the tent
The camps sit far enough from town that the sky actually delivers. Beds are made up in Swiss tents with attached bathrooms and running hot water.
What's in it, plainly
Camps differ, so we confirm your specific camp's inclusions in writing before anything is paid. This is the list you can normally expect.
- Hotel pickup and drop in Jaisalmer
- Camel safari across the dunes
- Jeep safari, where the camp offers it
- Evening tea and snacks
- Rajasthani folk music and dance
- Dinner — veg, and non-veg on request
- Swiss tent with attached bathroom
- Running hot water and quilts
- Bonfire on cold nights
- Breakfast before you leave
Swiss tents
The standard at most camps: a proper bed, an attached bathroom with hot water, electric light and a small verandah. Warm, clean, unglamorous in a good way.
Luxury tents
Bigger canvas, better beds, sometimes a sitting area and heating. Worth it in December and January, when the temperature drops hard after midnight.
Desert resorts
Permanent structures with room service, a restaurant and a stage for the evening programme. Least like camping, most like a hotel that happens to face the dunes.
Same desert, five different nights
Pricing depends on the camp, the season and how many of you there are, so we quote per trip rather than posting a number that would be wrong by December.
Desert evening
Everything except the night. Safari, sunset, the folk programme and dinner, then back to your Jaisalmer hotel.

Tight schedules, an early train the next morningOvernight camp
The same evening, then a tent, then the dunes at sunrise with almost nobody on them. This is the one to book.

A quieter camp, a private dune for sunset, dinner set apart from the main programme. Say if it is an anniversary or honeymoon and we will tell the camp.

Pickup, drop, and the awkward hours
- From your hotel
- Standard pickup is 15:00 from anywhere in Jaisalmer town, including the lanes inside the fort where we meet you at the nearest point a car can reach.
- Straight from the station
- If your train gets in late afternoon, we can take your bags and go directly to the dunes — no need to check into a hotel first for a night you won't sleep in it.
- Back the same night
- Return drops run around 22:00 to 22:30, after dinner. Tell us if you need to leave right after sunset and we'll arrange a separate car.
- Next-morning return
- Overnight guests usually come back between 09:00 and 10:00. If you have a train or flight, tell us the time and we'll work backwards from it.
What people want to know first
Camps vary more than the brochures suggest. Ask us about a specific one and you'll get a straight answer, including when the answer is that we'd book you somewhere else.

Book the dune before you book the tent.
Tell us the date and how many of you there are. We'll match you to a camp that fits, confirm exactly what's included, and hold it.
